Scheftelowitz, Isidor

Scheftelowitz, Isidor
(1876-1934)
   British orientalist, of German origin. He was born in Sandersleben, in the Duchy of Anhalt. He worked at the British Museum in London and at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. In 1908 he returned to Germany and until 1926 was a rabbi and teacher of religion in Cologne; in 1923 he became professor of Sanskrit and Iranian philology at Cologne University. He later settled in England and taught at Oxford University. He published studies of Sanskrit and Iranian philology and history, as well as compar-ative religion.
